PELVIC HEALTH

It’s more than just Kegels

Do you experience urinary leakage when you cough or jump? Or have pelvic pain that doesn’t seem to want to subside?

Did you realize that it may improve with the assistance of a pelvic health physiotherapist?

Your pelvic floor is a group of muscles that attach to the pelvic bones (tailbone, pelvis, etc) and form the shape of a hammock, or sling-like structure to support your pelvic organs. Occasionally, there can be a temporary loss of motor control or strength of these supportive structures following surgery, trauma, pregnancy and birth which may lead to a variety of pelvic conditions.

Pelvic Floor Therapy is a specialized physiotherapy that aims to help you to regain control of your health and body, as well as improve your mental health. These conditions are physically and emotionally challenging, but they are treatable if seen by the correct health care providers. Pelvic floor dysfunction is also common in men, especially incontinence following prostate surgery.

A recent Cochrane study indicated that physiotherapy should be the first line of defense before surgical consultation for the three most common pelvic conditions. These three common conditions are:

  • Stress Incontinence involves involuntary leakage of urine when you suddenly sneeze, laugh, cough or jump.
  • Urge Urinary Incontinence pertains to the involuntary leakage of urine with a sudden uncontrolled urge to urinate.
  • Pelvic Organ Prolapse is a distension of the urethra, bladder, uterus or the rectum through the vaginal wall due a loss of ligamentous support and loss of muscular control.

Pelvic Floor dysfunction is diagnosed by physiotherapists using external and internal manual techniques to evaluate the function of the pelvic floor muscles. The assessment is focusing on your ability to contract and relax these muscles around the pelvis. Self-care and patient education regarding your health is also an integral part of your treatment.
