Have you experienced a recent concussion, or whiplash related injury?
A concussion is considered a mild traumatic brain injury sustained by a bump, hit to the head or even a basic whiplash. Symptoms include dizziness, nausea, vomiting, lightheadedness, fogginess, off-balance, even anxiety and depression. Recent concussion rehabilitation research has changed our views on the recovery process post concussion. It now involves rest for the first 24-48 hours and then a monitored, progressive active recovery process guided by a professional. In order to successfully treat concussions, coaches, parents, athletic therapists and the individuals’ medical team must work in collaboration to ensure successful recovery.
Studies now show that concussion related symptoms are due to the stretching and shearing of the brain tissue at a cellular level from the injury. This in turn, can affect a variety of systems within our body such as our eyes, inner ears, neck and more.
Our initial assessments include an in-depth subjective history as well as an objective assessment of the following:
- Ocular Motor System (vision)
- Vestibular system (inner ear)
- Vestibular- ocular motor (VOR)system
- Vision Motion Sensitivity Testing
- Balance Testing
Once the assessment is complete, we are able to provide you with a clinical diagnosis and a personalized treatment program in collaboration with you to ensure your success. Treatment includes education, activity modifications, both school and work modifications, cervical spine therapy, VOR therapy, cardiovascular exercise program and progression of therapeutic exercise to return to school/activity/play.
