Below is how our process works, which products we carry, customization options, insurance considerations, and FAQs to help you understand everything.
How It Works: Custom Bracing & Supports Process
- Consultation & Assessment
-
- We’ll review your medical history, diagnosis, imaging (if available), and physical exam findings to determine if you need:
-
-
- An Over-The-Counter (OTC) brace support or;
- A Custom Brace
-
2. Prescription / Physician Input
-
-
- For insurance coverage to be used, your family physician or orthopedic specialist needs to write a prescription or referral indicating that a custom brace is required for “daily use”. We prepare an estimate letter that includes the brand, model, materials, cost breakdown, and indications.
-
3. Insurance Pre-Approval / Submission
-
-
- We will provide you with the estimate letter along with relevant medical documentation to your insurance company for approval.
- If the brace is approved, we proceed to ordering your over-the-counter (OTC) brace, or the next step below for CUSTOM bracing:
-
4. Custom Bracing Steps:
-
- Fitting (Measurements) Appointment: We will take precise measurements (weight-bearing, dynamic alignment) for your limb(s). Choose your customization options (padding, over-sleeves, color, strap configurations, etc.). We confirm final specs and send to the manufacturer.
- Manufacturing & Delivery: Custom brace fabrication typically takes ~10 business days (may vary by model and manufacturer). Once the brace arrives, we book a fitting session to adjust straps, fine-tune alignment, and educate you on donning, doffing, and care and a call to check in on the function of the brace.

| Bracing Type | Purpose / Indications | Notes & Features |

| DonJoy Defiance PRO (Custom) | Enhanced custom ligament support, even lighter and more refined | Improved strength-to-weight ratio, internal swivel straps, low profile design, antimicrobial liners. |
| OA / Off-loading Braces | For knee osteoarthritis (unicompartmental) support | Designed to shift load away from the damaged compartment (via 3-point offloading) to relieve pain and improve function. |
| Over-the-Counter (OTC) / Prefabricated Braces | General stability, mild support, post-injury rehab braces | These are ready-made in sizes (S, M, L, etc.) and adjustable. Good for mild conditions or as a secondary brace. |

Extended Health Insurance Coverage
- Does insurance cover custom braces?
Sometimes — for certain plans, if the brace is deemed medically necessary for daily use (rather than purely athletic). We recommend contacting your provider. - Process for coverage / pre-approval:
- We provide you with the estimate letter to submit to your insurer first.
- If approved, we then schedule a brace fitting.
FAQ’s (Frequently Asked Questions)
Do I need a physician’s referral?
In most cases yes — your doctor or specialist’s note helps with insurance approval and validates the medical necessity of custom bracing.
How long does it take for a custom brace to be made?
Typically about 10 business days from the time final measurements and specifications are submitted. (This can vary slightly depending on model and manufacturer).
What’s the difference between Defiance and Defiance PRO?
The Defiance PRO offers a lighter, more refined, low-profile design with improved materials (C-6 liner, swivel straps, etc.) while maintaining the same core 4-Points-of-Leverage and FourcePoint hinge system. Enovis+1
What is OA / meniscus off-loading bracing?
These braces help shift the weight-bearing load away from the diseased or painful compartment of the knee (medial or lateral) via mechanical leverage, reducing pain and improving function.
Can I still walk or do daily activity while waiting for the custom brace?
Yes — we can provide or recommend a temporary OTC / prefabricated brace for interim support.
Can the brace be adjusted later?
Yes — we can fine-tune straps, padding, alignment, and recommend upgrades if needed.
What if my insurance denies coverage?
We can explore over-the-counter (OTC), less expensive models. Some insurers allow appeals with additional documentation.
Will the brace fit under clothing / in shoes?
Many modern custom braces (e.g., Defiance, Defiance PRO) are designed to be low-profile so they can be worn under clothing or even in athletic gear. Enovis+2Enovis+2
