How It Works: Custom Bracing & Supports Process

  1. Consultation & Assessment
    • We’ll review your medical history, diagnosis, imaging (if available), and physical exam findings to determine if you need:
      • An Over-The-Counter (OTC) brace support or;
      • A Custom Brace

2. Prescription / Physician Input

      • For insurance coverage to be used, your family physician or orthopedic specialist needs to write a prescription or referral indicating that a custom brace is required for “daily use”. We prepare an estimate letter that includes the brand, model, materials, cost breakdown, and indications.

3. Insurance Pre-Approval / Submission

      • We will provide you with the estimate letter along with relevant medical documentation to your insurance company for approval.
      • If the brace is approved, we proceed to ordering your over-the-counter (OTC) brace, or the next step below for CUSTOM bracing:

4. Custom Bracing Steps:

    • Fitting (Measurements) Appointment: We will take precise measurements (weight-bearing, dynamic alignment) for your limb(s). Choose your customization options (padding, over-sleeves, color, strap configurations, etc.). We confirm final specs and send to the manufacturer.
    • Manufacturing & Delivery: Custom brace fabrication typically takes ~10 business days (may vary by model and manufacturer). Once the brace arrives, we book a fitting session to adjust straps, fine-tune alignment, and educate you on donning, doffing, and care and a call to check in on the function of the brace.

    Sometimes — for certain plans, if the brace is deemed medically necessary for daily use (rather than purely athletic). We recommend contacting your provider.

    • We provide you with the estimate letter to submit to your insurer first.
    • If approved, we then schedule a brace fitting.

Do I need a physician’s referral?

In most cases yes — your doctor or specialist’s note helps with insurance approval and validates the medical necessity of custom bracing.

How long does it take for a custom brace to be made?

Typically about 10 business days from the time final measurements and specifications are submitted. (This can vary slightly depending on model and manufacturer).

What’s the difference between Defiance and Defiance PRO?

Can the brace be adjusted later?

What if my insurance denies coverage?

Will the brace fit under clothing / in shoes?
